The No. 18 Missouri softball team opened their 2015 campaign in winning fashion, downing the Louisville Cardinals 5-1 in their season opener at the Dot Richardson Invitational in Clermont, Florida Friday. The Tigers were led by junior second baseman Sami Fagan’s three RBIs in the victory.
Mizzou started hot, with Fagan hitting a double in the top of the first inning, which brought in junior right fielder Emily Crane to give the Tigers an early lead. Later on in the inning, senior first baseman Chelsea Roth would hit a groundout RBI that brought in Fagan and put the Tigers ahead 2-0 after the first inning of the season.

Crane added an RBI single of her own, bringing home sophomore Natalie Fleming. Mizzou was not done, however, as Fagan would hit her second double of the game, bringing home Crane and senior Taylor Gadbois.

Down 5-0 in the fourth inning, Louisville managed to finally breakthrough on the scoreboard, as Nicole Pufahl was brought home on a Kelsi Jones double. This would be the only time the Cardinals could manage against the Tigers’ sophomore pitcher Tori Finucane. Finucane pitched a complete game, giving up only one run while managing to give up six hits, two walks, and registering four strikeouts.

Missouri will be back in action on Saturday, taking on Central Florida and Cleveland State in the second day of play in the Dot Richardson Invitational.
