Tennis Claims Five Titles at Mizzou Invite

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-The Missouri women’s tennis team came out of the with a total of five titles, two doubles and three singles, after play concluded at the Mizzou Invite at The Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo.

The Tigers faced off against Princeton, Oklahoma State, and Nebraska during the three-day event. Of the four participating teams, Missouri brought home the most titles.

The doubles title winners for the Tigers were Rachel Stuhlmann and Tracy Dong and Alex Clark and Madison Rhyner. The duo of Clark and Rhyner did not suffer a loss in a match all tournament.

In the singles positions, sophomore Kelli Hine (No. 4 singles), Clark (No. 5 singles), and freshman Cassidy Spearman (No. 6 singles) all took home titles for Missouri. Clark and Spearman each did not drop a match during the entirety of the event. Over the three-day tournament, Clark finished with an 8-0 record in singles and doubles play.

As for Sunday’s singles action, the Tigers where victories in six of the eight matches they played in against Nebraska. In the No. 2 position, senior Cierra Gaytan-Leach notched a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Brittany Brewster. Stuhlmann also won a 6-3, 6-0 match against Katerina Maysova in the No. 3 spot.

In the No. 4 position, Clark defeated her opponent, Lisa Anderson, 6-3, 6-3. Elisha Gabb won her match against opponent Hannah Sulz 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 5 position. The No. 6 player, Spearman had the most dominating victory of the day, defeating Lauren Wagner 6-0, 6-0. At No. 7, Rhyner closed out the Tiger’s Sunday singles victories by earning a 3-2 win after her opponent, Izabella Zgierska, was forced to retire.

Mizzou won two of the four doubles matches against Oklahoma State on Sunday, as the two-title winning teams both posted victories. The No. 3 duo of Dong and Stuhlmann claimed an 8-3 victory over the Mariah Burke and Morgan McCray. Mizzou’s No. 4 team, Clark and Rhyner outlasted the Cowboys’ Sulz and Zgierska 8-5.

The tennis team will be back in action at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, Oct. 1 in Los Angeles, Calif.
