Friday, Feb. 20-

The Missouri Tigers tennis team faced another setback on Friday, beginning their final non-conference road trip of the season with a 4-2 loss to the No. 56 ranked Houston Cougars. The loss drops the Tigers’ team record to 7-4.

Houston drained the energy out of Mizzou’s singles players fairly quickly, as five of the six Cougars won the first set against their Tiger opponent. Mizzou singles players Kelli Hine, Cassidy Spearman, Brianna Lashley and Madison Rhyner were all swept against their respective combatant.

However, the matches themselves were closer than the final score suggests. Kelli Hine took Houston’s top singles opponent Despoina Vogasari to a seven-point tiebreaker before losing her first set 7-6. Brianna Lashway also brought both of her sets to tiebreakers against Houston’s Rocio Martin, only to lose both sets 7-6.

At least the day proved positive for a few Tigers. Beatriz Machado Santos and Brittany Lashway contributed to the Tigers only match victories on the day.

Santos defeated her opponent by scores of 6-1 and 6-4, improving her record in singles play to 7-1. Although Brittany Lashway lost her first set by the score of 6-3, she strung together an impressive comeback. The sophomore won her next two sets 6-1 and 6-4 to earn her third singles victory of the season.

After collecting enough points to win the competition through singles, Houston decided to cancel the doubles matches as a result of inclement weather. As a result, the event was shortened and all doubles matches originally anticipated for the day were canceled.

Mizzou Tennis continues their road trip through Texas tomorrow, playing the Texas A&M- Corpus Christi Islanders in Corpus Christi, Texas, at 2 p.m. This will be the team’s last chance to earn a win before conference play begins next week.
