Mizzou tennis defeated BYU, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Mizzou Tennis Complex to bounce back from its first loss of the season.

The Tigers (8-1) were led by standout performances from junior Bea Machado Santos and senior Kelli Hine, each of whom picked up wins as individuals and partners.

The Tigers’ number one team of Hine and Santos defeated Mayci Jones and Tobi Miclat, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point for the Tigers following an opening win from the number two team of junior Cassidy Spearman and sophomore Brianna Lashway. With the win, the duo improves to 7-0 in spring play.

The Tigers picked up four wins in singles play, as well. Santos, Hine, junior Brittany Lashway and freshman Turner Yates earned straight set victories. With the win, Hine continued her perfect start to the spring season improving to 9-0 in singles play, while Santos improves to 8-1. Brittany Lashway’s 6-1, 6-0 win over Savannah Ware clinched the victory for Mizzou.

BYU (1-4) was led by Miclat and Natella Nabieva, the only players to score points for the cougars. Miclat won her third singles match of the season by defeating Brianna Lashway, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot.

BYU will next travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face Texas Tech on Friday, Feb. 19.

The Tigers will travel for their next six matches beginning with two on Friday, March 19. First, Mizzou will face Savannah State in Savannah, Georgia, followed by a matchup with Mercer in Macon, Georgia.
