The Mizzou men’s wrestling team got their season started off early on Saturday morning in the second-annual Alumni Black and Gold Match. The match consisted of the current Tiger wrestling team and the Alumni team, which included 11 alums, including three All-Americans and two National Champions.

The Tiger wrestling team first got a score from Matt Manley with a decision over the recent graduate Eric Wilson. The alumni would win the next three matches.

Among these three match wins was a very interesting matchup between Brandon West and his younger brother Trevor. Brandon would go on to beat his younger brother 6-1.

Khris Whelan, the oldest alumni in the group lost a 4-3 decision to a current member of the Tiger team, Ty Prazma. Whelan graduated in ’83 and had taken All-American honors in ’80 and ’83. The former Tiger National Champion pinned Ben Askren over Cody Johnston and had a decision win en route to the alumni capturing the last four matches.

Of the six exhibition matches that took place between current Tigers, sophomore Barlow McGee won the first match over redshirt sophomore Cody Hummer by major decision, 10-2 after an extra point was added for riding time.

In the second match, redshirt sophomore Cole Baumgartner won over freshman John Erneste by a score of 7-5. In the next match, a close one, true freshman Daniel Lewis escaped with a win over the redshirt sophomore Matt Lemanowicz, 3-1.

In the last exhibition match, the true freshman Jacob Semple and Wood Mancuso battled in heavyweight and Semple would end up winning 5-1.

The Tigers will get going in a tournament as they head to Ames, Iowa for the Cyclone Open next Saturday.
