The Missouri Tiger tennis team welcomed the Wichita State Shockers to Columbia on Friday. The Tigers hoped to build on their perfect 6-0 record at home at home on the season. The stars would not align, however, and the Shockers became the first team all year to take the doubles point from Mizzou and went on to win three of the six singles matches to earn the 4-3 victory on the road.

Mizzou got off on the right foot in the doubles portion of the competition, with Mackenzy Middlebrooks and Ellie Wright taking the first game by a score of 6-3. Their teammates, however, couldn’t keep up the hot start. The Tigers dropped both the second and third games. Clare Raley and Serena Nash lost 7-5,  while the pair of Amina Ismail and Taylor Gruber fell 6-4.

Wichita picked up right where they left off in the singles competition, picking up wins in each of the first two games. The match was far from over, and Mizzou wasn’t about to go down without a fight. The dynamic duo of doubles, Wright and Middlebrooks, each claimed victories and Amina Ismail followed suit to tie the match at 3-3. In the end, it came down to a pivotal match between Clare Raley and Wichita’s Marta Bellucco. They split the first two sets before Bellucco scraped out a 7-6 win to claim the victory for her and her team.

Coming up on Sunday, the Tigers will play host Kansas State and UMKC in Columbia.
