The 2018 NCAA indoor track-and-field season kicked off on Friday as Mizzou hosted the Missouri Holiday Opener. The Tigers were among five teams to participate on the day, and MU had a lot of success. Multiple Tigers won their events on the day.

The Tigers had four men’s participants win their events. Avery Carter, a redshirt junior from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, received first place honors in the men’s shot put and weight throw. Freshman Chris Conrad won the 600-meter run. Redshirt senior Ben Goodman also ran well as he finished first in the mile.

Landon Cuskelly, a junior from El Dorado, Kansas, won the men’s high jump. This is surely to be one of many first-place finishes for him this season. Cuskelly is a three-time NJCAA All-American, a three-time individual regional champion, and a three-time individual conference champion. This year, Cuskelly will continue to improve his high jump and will undoubtedly help the Tiger’s men’s squad.

Mizzou also had three women’s participants place rather high in their events. Karissa Roman, a junior from Kewanee, Illinois, won the high jump. Her teammate Valeria Kostiuk finished right behind her.

Gabi Jacobs, a redshirt junior from Bloomington, Illinois, won the women’s shotput. Jacobs had an immense amount of success in 2017. She was an NCAA Outdoor First-Team All-American in discus, an NCAA Championship qualifier in discus, and an NCAA West Preliminary qualifier in shot put and discus. If Jacobs can build on last season, she is sure to have an even better season in 2018.

The Tigers, after competing well at the Missouri Holiday Opener, will have to wait until January 12th to participate in a meet again. They will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas to participate in the Arkansas Invitational.
