Tigers Drop Second Straight Despite Crafton’s 20

Thursday, Feb. 14-

Sydney Crafton brought high energy and toughness, posting 20 points for the Lady Tigers in their matchup against Vanderbilt on Thursday. Unfortunately for the Mizzou, Crafton’s performance was not enough as the Tigers (15-10, 4-7) fell to the Lady Commodores (16-8, 6-5) 62-46.

In the first matchup of the season with Vanderbilt, the Tigers started off playing well, with Crafton and Liz Smith helping Mizzou grab an early 8-4 lead. But the Tigers lead was short lived. Vanderbilt hit two straight buckets to tie it up and never looked back.

The Commodores were playing their first game of the season without guard and second-leading scorer Christina Foggie, but other players stepped up to make up for her absence. Four Commodores scored in double digits, including Jasmine Lister who led Vanderbilt with 18 points.

Crafton brought the Tigers within two after the Commodores made six straight baskets. Vanderbilt pulled ahead for the rest of the first half until Morgan Eye made a late three to bring the Tigers within nine at the break.

Vanderbilt stayed in control for the second half, maintaining a double-digit lead down the stretch. The closest the Tigers were to the Commodores was 25-34 after another three from Eye.

The Tigers played sub-par defense, allowing the Commodores to shoot 22-47 from the field and 5-10 from behind the arc. Crafton led Mizzou with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Eye and Smith also contributed, scoring nine and eight points respectively.

Vanderbilt went on an 8-0 run to go up 47-32 before Crafton was finally able to get a bucket. The Commodores retaliated quickly, when Heather Bowe made a duece to put Vanderbilt up 49-34 with under six minutes left.

Crafton made several layups late in the game, but Vanderbilt stayed in control, containing her for the final two minutes and converting at the free-throw line to pull off the 16-point victory.

The Tigers hope to bounce back after two straight losses when they travel to Arkansas on Sunday to take on the Razorbacks.
