Last year in the NCAA tournament, the South Carolina Gamecocks won their program’s first NCAA title as they beat Mississippi State 67-55. They finished the season with an extremely impressive 33-4 record. This season the Gamecocks sit at fourth ranked in the nation. They came into Sunday’s game against Mizzou with a 13-1 record, their only loss coming at the hands of Notre Dame.

The Tigers came into Sunday’s match against the Gamecocks with a bit of a chip on their shoulder. They lost a tough game against LSU despite Amber Smith scoring a career high twenty-seven points. This loss snapped the Tiger’s thirteen game win streak, and MU was looking to turn it around against South Carolina.

Mizzou brought their A-game against the Gamecocks. Although MU had eighteen turnovers as a team, they held off the fourth-ranked team in the nation and picked up the win 83-74.

For South Carolina, Tyasha Harris tied for the team’s leading scorer with Bianca Jackson. Harris finished with fourteen points and ten assists in thirty-eight minutes while Jackson totaled fourteen in twenty-nine minutes. Mikiah Herbert Harrigan, Lindsey Spann, and Alexis Jennings all totaled eleven points for the Gamecocks.

On the Mizzou side of things, Sophie Cunningham had a night. She was stuffing the stat sheet as she finished with twenty-seven points, seven assists, and six rebounds. Amber Smith also continued her streak of good basketball as she finished with twenty points and twelve boards.

Mizzou will move on from this incredible win and next match up against Vanderbilt on Thursday.
