Tigers See Signs of Potential, but Fall Short in Fall Finale

Thursday, Oct. 20 – Monday, Oct. 24 –

The Missouri Tigers finished up their season this weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals. The Tigers finished off a respectable season and saw signs from underclassmen, foreshadowing good things to come for Missouri.

Sophomore Rachel Stuhlmann was one such standout as she dominated in her first match, winning 6-0, 6-0. She was the only singles player to be victorious for Mizzou in the first round and looked to make a deep run in the tournament. However, she struggled in her second match against Nebraska’s Mary Weatherholt, losing in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

Stuhlmann wasn’t the only Tiger in action this weekend as senior Jamie Mera took on Nebraska’s Janine Weinrich. Jamie dropped the first set but showed resilience to win the second set 7-5 in a tie-breaker. However, Jamie ran out of gas in the third set, losing the set 6-0 and the match 2-1.

Freshman Alexandra Clark also showed positive signs as she took her first set against St Louis’ Jenny Nalepa 6-3. She could not hold on though, dropping her final two sets.

On the doubles side, Missouri youngsters Stuhlmann and Clark found success in their only match of the weekend, beating South Dakota State 8-3. However, it was the upperclassmen combo of Mera and Koenen that struggled, losing against St. Louis 8-4.

The Tigers did not find the ending they were hoping for this season, but they know they have room to improve. The Tigers know heading into next year that they should be even better as underclassmen mature and get better.

The Missouri Tigers tennis team will resume action Jan. 14-16 in Bloomington, Ind.
