Tigers Start Season with Black/Gold Exhibition

Saturday, Feb. 11-

The No. 5 Missouri Softball team held their annual Black and Gold intersquad exhibition game to kick off their season on Saturday.

The game is usually more of a final audition for the players then a competitive game. The coaches use the game to help make their final decisions on who should be starting once the real competition begins.

The Black team defeated the Gold team 8-0 while both teams showed outstanding pitching. Senior Kristin Nottelmann pitched six shutout innings with eight strikeouts and only two walks to earn the victory for the Black team. Catcher Jenna Marston went 2-5 on the day with two RBIs to give Nottelmann some run support.

Chelsea Thomas pitched for the Gold team and had a very impressive outing, but due to three errors and a passed ball, she was credited with the loss. Thomas pitched six innings allowing only one earned run, four hits and one walk while striking out six.

The Black team’s pitching was just too much for the Gold team as they could only get three hits in all nine innings. Unfortunately for the Gold team, the Black team’s bats were hot almost all day. Corrin Genovese, Ashley Fleming and Kelsea Roth all went 2-5 on the day with Genovese also scoring two runs.

The Tigers, who are ranked first in the Big 12 in the preseason rankings, are looking to make it four consecutive years with trips to the College World Series. With a No. 5 national ranking, the Tigers look like they have the talent to make it.

Missouri will officially kick off their season by competing in the Quality Inn Classic in Troy, Ala. on Friday, Feb. 17. The Tigers start the classic with a doubleheader on Friday with a game against Ball State at 2:00 p.m. and then a game against Troy at 7:00 p.m. They will have another doubleheader on Saturday and one final game on Sunday.
