The 23rd ranked Missouri Tigers took on the Coppin State Eagles in the semifinals of the Cal Classic on Friday. Coppin State came into the tournament having lost three of their first four games of the season, and their luck would not turn around against Missouri as they lost 73-50.

Coppin State shot themselves in the foot by giving up rebound after rebound, only picking up twenty-five boards to Mizzou’s forty-five. The Eagles poor paint defense was another big reason why they lost the game as they gave up thirty points down low to the Tigers while only scoring eight themselves. Coppin State also shot only thirty percent from the floor on the game while turning the ball over fourteen times.

For Missouri, junior guard and reigning AP All-America Honorable Mention Sophie Cunningham recorded fifteen points and two assists in twenty minutes on the floor. The Columbia native also shot nearly sixty percent from the floor. Cierra Porter also played well for the Tigers as she flirted with a double-double, scoring twelve points and racking up eight boards.

Coppin State’s redshirt senior Genesis Lucas led all players in scoring with nineteen on the night. She also picked up three boards and played an impressive thirty-eight minutes. Maraiyah Smith also played well for the Eagles as she totaled fifteen points while playing the entire game.

Coppin State will match up against Manhattan College in the consolation game of the Cal Classic for their next match. Mizzou will go on to participate in the Cal Classic Championship. The Tigers will play 21st ranked California for the title.
