Tigers Sweep Last Road Match

Monday, Nov. 15

As the Missouri volleyball team begins to wrap up its season, the Tigers continued their dominating streak with their 19th win of the season in the form of an impressive sweep over the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

With a little help from multiple mistakes committed by the Bulldogs, the Tigers took an early lead in the first set. Controlling the net, they went up 17-7 and never looked back, only allowing the Bulldogs two more points before taking the set 25-9.

Coming out with their spirits high, Missouri started off the second set in the same manner. With the offense completely taking control of the game, the Tigers converted 15 kills hitting .412, committing only one error.

Yet again, the All-American junior Lisa Hennings was a force to be reckoned with as she led the Tigers with an impressive 15 kills, over a third of the team’s total. Up and coming freshman, Regan Peltier, followed in Hennings’ footsteps hitting .269 and putting up a solid 10 kills.

Following the intermission, Mississippi State was not ready to go down without a fight. The Bulldogs took a strong defensive approach, which in turn, got the Mizzou hitters quite flustered. After rallying to a 20-14 lead over the Tigers, Mizzou head coach Wayne Kreklow called a time-out to regroup his team.

The time out rejuvenated the determined Tigers who went on to tie the game at 23-23. After controlling much of the third set, the Bulldogs could not seem to finish. Committing yet another crucial mistake, the Tigers took advantage and went up 24-23. Finishing with three very intense rallies, the Tigers came out on top 26-24, completing the sweep.

The game was the perfect confidence builder that Mizzou needed, as the Tigers will return home this week for their final two matches of the season. They will try and rally for their 20th win of the season, as they host the Kentucky Wildcats at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Hearnes Center. The vital matchup could be a determining factor for the Tigers’ fate in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
