Tigers Swim and Dive Opens Season

The Mizzou Swimming and Diving Team unofficially opened up their season traveling to the second annual CSCAA National Collegiate Open Water Championship hosted at Lone Star Lake in Lawrence, Kansas.

The Mizzou men dominated the field taking home the 2017 Men’s Title easily by eight points with Carson Newman (37) and George Washington (41) well behind. The star of the day was redshirt freshman Giovanni Gutierrez Lozano (Lima, Peru) who was the lone swimmer under an hour as he swam 59:25.05 to finish first in the 5,000-meter race (3.1 miles) Right behind him was Tiger sophomore Giovanny Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) with who posted 1:01:59.30. Other notable Tigers competing were freshman Carter Grimes (Las Vegas, Nevada), who took fifth in 1:02:13.12, and junior Jacob Wielinski (Mounds View, Minnesota), who placed seventh in 1:04:12.31.

The Mizzou women finished in third place with 25 points behind Rice and the defending champs the Kansas Jayhawks. Four Mizzou women competed in the event led by seniors Kira Zubar (Chaska, Minnesota) who finished seventh at 1:05:31.60 and Sharli Brady (Burlington, Kentucky) finishing just behind at 1:05:31.85. the Women Tigers rounded out the race with sophomore Azra Avdic (Skokie, Illinois) finishing in 10th place with a 1:05:41.65 and Courtney Evensen (Golden Valley, Minnesota) finished in 11th place with a 1:05:50.79.

The Mizzou Men’s and Women swimming and diving programs officially will open the 2017-18 season at the 12th annual Show-Me Showdown on Friday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
