UM System President Mun Choi announced Alexander Cartwright as the new chancellor for MU.

“Dr. Cartwright is joining the University of Missouri-Columbia at a pivotal time in our history,” Choi said. “His leadership and accomplishments in the areas of research and creative works, student outcomes, economic development and access and inclusion will be the catalyst that leads MU to a new era of excellence.”

Truman the Tiger, UM System President Mun Choi and Chancellor-designate Alexander Cartwright show their tiger spirit.

Cartwright comes to MU from The State University of New York system where he most recently served as the provost and executive vice president of SUNY’s 64 campuses.

Among Cartwright’s biggest administration during his time at SUNY: the creation of a strategic enrollment planning process and a system infrastructure to support faculty innovation and retention, according to an MU News release.

“The opportunity to become chancellor of one of the nation’s top public state universities is the chance of a lifetime,” said Cartwright. “I am honored and humbled by the faith in me exhibited by the search committee, President Mun Choi and the Board of Curators. The University of Missouri-Columbia is a world-class institution, the perfect example of a land-grant institution for the 21st Century.”

Choi made it clear several times throughout his speech that he wanted someone who would be in this position for many years to come.

“There is no question that MU is one of the state’s most valuable assets,” said Cartwright. “We look forward to joining the Mizzou family and to working together to protect and grow that value.”

According to Choi, Cartwright’s salary will be $425,000 a year. There will also be a $15,000 car allowance and a longevity incentive of $25,000 a year if he stays for five years.

Cartwright addresses the audience at the announcement ceremony on Wednesday, May 24, 2017.

Cartwright’s appointment comes five months after then President-Designate Choi and then interim President Mike Middleton announced a search committee to find a new chancellor for the University.

The role of chancellor had been held by Hank Foley since November 2015 when R. Bowin Loftin resigned over criticism of his handling of the November 2015 protests and complaints about his job performance from deans. Loftin’s resignation came as a result of the same protests that forced then system president Tim Wolfe to resign.

Foley left MU in early May to become the president of the New York Institute of Technology. MU’s executive vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost Garnett Stokes took over for Foley in the interim.

Choi introduced Cartwright at a packed ceremony. Among those in attendance were MU head football coach Barry Odom, State Sen. Caleb Rowden and former president Mike Middleton.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled that Dr. Cartwright has been named Mizzou’s Chancellor,” said Elizabeth Loboa, MU Dean of Engineering and MU Chancellor Search Committee Co-Chair, in an MU News release. “Dr. Cartwright is an experienced, data-driven administrator with strong research credentials. He epitomizes what Mizzou stands for as a high intellect, high integrity leader. We are lucky to have him lead our great institution.”
