Brunch, the ideal meal. You want pancakes with a side of French fries? Done. A hamburger with hash browns? You got it. Not only does brunch give you the best of both worlds when it comes to food choice, but it is also usually eaten at an ideal time, around 11 a.m. This gives you plenty of time to sleep in, take a quick shower and head out to meet a friend for a classy mid-morning meal. So, for those of you like me who are always in search of a quality brunch experience, here is a list of five great places to go in Columbia, Missouri.

1. Ernie’s

Ernie’s has been open for over 75 years, making it the oldest full-service restaurant in Columbia. Ernie’s is a cute ’50s style diner located at 1005 E. Walnut St. You can either sit at a table or at the counter on classic ’50s stools. Sitting in Ernie’s you almost feel as if you’ve stepped back into another decade. And the best part about it all? It’s very cheap! If you’re looking for a place to eat breakfast for fewer than five dollars, Ernie’s is the place to go.

2. Broadway Diner

Broadway Diner is a little, almost hidden restaurant on Fourth Avenue. The diner is the home of the famous “Stretch,” a plate of hash browns covered in scrambled eggs, chili, cheddar cheese, green peppers and onions that comes in three sizes- half, original, and super stretch. But for those of us who don’t have the stomach stamina to tackle the stretch, the diner offers a great variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner options to choose from. Broadway Diner is extremely affordable with most of the brunch options costing six dollars or under. Along with this Broadway Diner is open 24/7, so not only can you brunch there, but cure your case of midnight munchies as well.

3. Café Berlin

Café Berlin is as artsy as the name suggests. They like to keep their food simple and their suppliers local. Located on N 10th St, this restaurant and music venue combination is a local favorite. Café Berlin’s menu offers a variety of creative food creations. If you’re in the mood for some crazy pancakes, look no further than Café Berlin. They offer all sorts of toppings from chocolate chips to blue cheese to bacon. Café Berlin even offers a special weekend brunch menu to keep your brunch experience as simple as possible. If you do decide to go for weekend brunch, be prepared to wait for a few minutes, as the Café is fairly popular. However, the wait is well worth it for the amazing food!

4. Lucy’s Corner Café

Looking to get away from the normal college crowd? Try Lucy’s! Located on E. Broadway, Lucy’s is known for serving hearty breakfast to a regular crowd.

The food, while not as inexpensive as some of the others mentioned, is decently priced, and there are a large variety of combinations to choose from. And with the fact that breakfast is served anytime they’re open, Lucy’s is a great choice for both the early and the late brunch-ers out there! With a homey feel and friendly wait staff, Lucy’s will make you feel like a regular no matter if it’s your first time there or your fiftieth.

5. Glen’s Café

If you’re looking to take your brunch experience to the next level, try out Glen’s Café. Located on S 8th St, the Cajun style food Glen’s has to offer is sure to spice up your brunch experience. While it is a little higher up on the price range, Glen’s Café is a local favorite that is worth the extra price. If you’re looking for somewhere a bit more upscale to take your significant other to on a brunch date, Glen’s is a great option.

Columbia is a great place to live for people who love to brunch, and this list only covers a few options the city has to offer. From tiny diners to classy restaurants, the city has it all. So, what are you waiting for? Get a few friends together and go brunch!
